ATCA or AdvancedTCA means Advanced Telecom Computer Architecture. Intel was one of the main promoters and it all started in 2002. The new newsletter will be focusing on HW & SW COTS from silicon to application ready systems for Next Gen Communications and Networks showcasing the latest in “best-in-class” technology solutions from leading Embedded Vendors for your “Make-or-Buy” decisions.
What are the ATCA products? • Servers application ready • Boards and related HW for integrators to build their own system “à la carte” • There are mezzanine boards available offering many functions and can be plugged into the ATCA boards; these are AMC cards or Advanced Mezzanine Cards. Those same AMC cards can be used directly in a smaller chassis called MicroTCA (see picture)
What is ATCA and what are the advantages versus other systems? • Open system but in addition available from several vendors and are interoperable, so you will not be locked by one single source (look at VME, still dominating the Embedded Computer business after 30 years) • ATCA is a standard specifications available from PICMG (as for VME, cPCI, …) • The technical advantages are High Performance Computing, High Availability (HA 99,999%) and High Density • Many options available from several suppliers, very flexible, reuse ($$$) and easy to upgrade and/or add functions
Applications in deployment Communications Infrastructure and Networks: • Mainly used for mobile infrastructures • Advanced and new applications include: LTE, Femtocell, IMS, Softswitch, Lawful Interception, Security, and more • Is the right solution for the move from 10G to 40G hardly needed for Mobile TV and Mobile Video Defence & Aerospace: • For several years used in deep seas in Alaska, the chassis are installed in large inox/stainless cylinders • Used in Multi-mission Aircrafts from the US NAVY • Much more applications to come for the Next Decade Military Networks • In the US the DoD and especially the NAVY wants to move from a mix of every thing to real open systems, meaning available from several vendors, ATCA seems to be the best choice • Ruggedized versions are now available Other applications, Hi-end Niche: • Critical systems • Medical • Research Labs: physics, nuclear • Energy • More to come
Software – several powerful SW products are available from leading suppliers: • Linux is the most popular on the Control Plane, for the Data Plane using DSPs or NPUs from Cavium, LSI, Freescale, TI, ARM, NetLogic there are a number of Multicore RTOS for CPUs, DSPs and NPUs and also DSP Management SW for example from ENEA • Network Automation / Configuration, XML based and on-device config • High Availability
Many large users: Here are just a few examples: Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nortel, Nokia Siemens Networks, ZTE, BAE Systems, US NAVY
