Common multi channel measurement cards mainly work in multiplex mode, in which one A/D converter sequentially samples all inputs. The downsides are obvious: phase mismatch between the channels, crosstalk due charge held in the multiplexer, as well as a maximum sampling rate that depends on number of the active channels.
The new 16 Bit A/D cards M2i.46xx and M2i.47xx from Spectrum for the PCI/PCI-X bus avoid these problems due to their fully synchronous design, utilising the advantages of separate amplifiers and A/D converters for each channel, providing up to 8 A/D channels with 3 MS/s or 16 A/D channels with 500 KS/s. Models with 2, 4, 8 or 16 channels and sampling rates between 200 kS/s and 3 MS/s are available.
All channels have 8 individual switchable input ranges between ±50 mV and ±10 V. Besides this; the cards of the M2i.46xx series offer true differential inputs that can be activated in software. Therefore two channels are not combined – as at other manufacturers – but the input amplifiers are switched. Hence the full amount of channels are made available in differential mode.
During the development of the high resolution 16 Bit series Spectrum laid special interest on the quality of the amplifier and the A/D conversion. For example the M2i.4641 reaches more than 14.5 ENOB (Effective Number of Bits) at 1 MS/s and ±5 V differential input. The SFDR (Spurious Free Dynamic Range) is at >110 dB with this configuration. Also the small input ranges reach excellent performance with a RMS noise of approx. 20 µV (micro-volt).
Alongside individual and combinable trigger and on-board calibration, the cards give the benefits of big on-board memory, fast interface and rich software support. Drivers for Windows and Linux (32 Bit and 64 Bit version) as well as examples for all established programming languages are provided. The versatile interface possibilities to third-party products include LabVIEW, LabWindows, MATLAB, VEE, DASYLab or MS Excel.
