FREMONT, California – Elma Electronic, a leading designer and manufacturer of rotary components and electronic packaging products, introduces a new SMD version of the e27 encoder product line. Elma´s e27 encoders are specifically designed to have a longer rotational life than other encoders, which translates into cost-savings over the life of the finished product they´re in, and the SMD design saves money in the manufacturing processes.
The e27 series of encoders have a mechanical life of over 100,000 rotations. Manufactured in Europe, Elma´s new e27 SMD encoders are a much more robust device than many run-of-the-mill encoders made in the Far East. Most Far East encoders have a life of 25,000 rotations or less. The 12 x 14 mm sized incremental encoder is available in either 30 or 16 pulses per rotation versions. The heavily flashed gold contacts ensure reliable encoder switching, and the smooth, accurate indexing system features selectable torques of 0.5 Ncm, 1.0 Ncm, 1.5 Ncm, or 2.5 Ncm. The push-button tactile force can be specified at the standard 6 Ncm or 3 Ncm, with a travel distance of .5 mm.
Elma´s e27 SMD encoders save costs in the manufacturing process. The encoders can be mounted with other SMD components without the expense of drilling special holes, and the cost of a separate soldering process is saved. To make the SMT process even easier, the encoder is supplied with the shaft removed, allowing more space during SMT soldering. The shaft can then be permanently snapped into place after soldering. To offer added reliability, the encoders feature solderable stabilizing flanges on each side of the device. This provides added mechanical durability in mounting the encoder to the board. Further, the flanges make the device sturdy and help protect the solder joints from damage throughout the life of the product. Lastly, the SMD encoders can withstand solder oven temperatures of up to 260 degrees Celsius.
