Fremont, CA - Elma Electronic Inc. today announced the introduction of a new shielding spring for compact PCI and VME64x panels. The new CAE series spring design successfully addresses the longstanding issues of snagging and slippage.
The non-segmented design of the CAE series springs make them virtually immune to snagging on solder pins. The cross section of the spring was optimized through the aid of finite element analysis to be compliant enough to apply even shielding pressure along its entire length. Its shielding effectiveness, measured between 30MHz to 5.5GHz, is just as good as Elma´s segmented springs.
Also revolutionary in the design of this spring are the friction control surfaces along the backside of the spring. Panels that are 4HP wide will capture the EMC spring between the top and bottom handle and so slippage is not a problem. On panels wider than 4HP though, springs are held in place only by friction. If an unnoticed spring slides down on a panel it can be sheared off during card insertion and fall into the card cage. The challenge in the past has been to apply enough pressure to prevent the spring from sliding off in normal use but not so much as to cause the spring to buckle during assembly. Small variations in spring tolerances have a significant impact on the consistency of this pressure. Elma´s CAE series springs avoid this extreme sensitivity to tolerances by employing dimpled friction control surfaces that provide a consistent force that will allow the spring to be assembled and won´t slide off.
